Capitol safety rules: a reminder
CHARLESTON,
W.Va. – With large crowds expected on campus, normal safety and
security rules remain in effect at the West Virginia Capitol Complex.
The main Capitol’s Directed Public Access
Points, located at the wheelchair-accessible entrances to the East and West
Wings, will open at 7:45 a.m. both Thursday and Friday. They will stay open for
the duration of legislative activities in the building.
The Capitol’s other entrances require
electronic access cards. Card holders should use these other entrances to aid
the flow of visitors at the public access points. Allowing non-cardholders into
the Capitol with an access card is prohibited, as is propping open doors.
Visitors can aid their entry into the
Capitol by arriving early and ensuring they do not possess any prohibited items.
These items include sticks, including those affixed to signs; dangerous weapons;
Cap-Stun or pepper spray; other items and materials that to Capitol Police appear
to pose a risk to people or property; and animals.
Prohibited items will not be stored,
confiscated or otherwise disposed of by access point personnel. Any visitor who
refuses to submit to a screening will be denied access to the Capitol. The
Capitol Police further reminds visitors that backpacks, coolers and bags
brought on to the campus are subject to search.
